and its called that because alumni are supposed to come back for the game?

what it means is that the alumni or students who went to school here before get to come home so to speak to be remembered. l am not sure why they added a dance to it. when my mother went to school they didnt have a dance it was just a welcome home for alumni.

Homecoming is/was traditionally centered around a particular football game when all of the alumna who graduated from the school are invited to come back, see the game, and have a sort of re-union at their old school. The tradition is stronger in colleges. In high schools, it mostly revolves around the dance.
